The baby hatch room is not monitored by video surveillance and is open around the clock. Approximately seven minutes after the hatch is closed, an alarm is sent to the emergency control center.
Since December 23, 2008, KARO e. V. has been operating the first baby hatch in Plauen (Vogtland).
The baby hatch is a service for mothers in dire need. If there is no other way out, they can place their baby safely and anonymously in a protected heated bed shortly after birth.
After the baby is handed over, the emergency services are informed immediately. The baby is taken to the Helios Clinic, where it is examined and cared for by medical professionals. This ensures that the baby receives safe care right from the start.
The baby hatch can save lives. It helps prevent infanticide and the abandonment of newborns.
Pregnant women and mothers can seek advice at any time:
- by telephone,
- by email,
- or in person.
The advice is free, confidential, and anonymous if desired. It is also available after the child has been handed over. The conversations are open and without pressure.
To date, 13 children have been saved thanks to the baby hatch. All children were examined in hospital and then placed in foster families by the youth welfare office.
To protect the children, we do not disclose any information about babies who have been handed in to the public. The privacy and personal rights of the children are our top priority.

- Connection to Plauen tram network (max. 2 min walk)
- Good motorway connection: A 72 towards Hof/Chemnitz
- Other road connections: B92 (travel time approx. 1 min)
- B173 (travel time approx. 2 min)
- City center (10 min walk)
